Robotic Surgical System is Here at Carlisle Regional Medical Center

Drs. Dussinger and Centenera to perform robotic prostatectomies starting in January 2009

The state of the art da Vinci Surgical System has arrived at Carlisle Regional Medical Center. Robotic surgery will begin in January 2009. Andrew Dussinger, MD and Virgilio Centenera, MD of Carlisle Urology will use the robotic surgical platform to treat prostate cancer, kidney cancer, and urinary incontinence in a minimally invasive way. Procedures will include prostatectomy, nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, pyeloplasty, and abdominal sacrocolpopexy. Dr. Dussinger completed training at Indiana University in 2006 where the da Vinci Surgical System is used extensively for the treatment of cancer and incontinence.

The da Vinci surgical platform has been used nationally since 2001. In that time, the robotically performed prostatectomy has replaced the standard open prostatectomy as the number one surgical technique used to treat prostate cancer.

Using the da Vinci Surgical System, the surgeon operates while seated at a console viewing a 3-D image of the surgical field. The use of two internal optical systems allows for this three dimensional image and significantly improves the surgeons ability to see during the operation. The surgeon's fingers fit into master controls at the console and finger, hand, and wrist movements are seamlessly translated into precise, real-time movements of the surgical instruments inside the patient.

The state of the art optical system and patented robotic technology has allowed surgeons to perform complex operations in a minimally invasive way. The increased clinical capability with robotic surgery explains its expanding use in many types of surgery.

By enhancing surgical capabilities, the da Vinci Surgical System helps to improve clinical outcomes: for example, patients who have a robotic prostatectomy often experience reduced blood loss and risk of blood transfusions, decreased postoperative pain, shorter hospital stay, and a quicker return to work and normal activity.
